Organizing 3D files on a Mac: models, textures and renders
3D work leaves STL, OBJ, FBX, GLB, USDZ and Blender files everywhere. How to organize 3D files on a Mac, and the file organizer with a 3D Models category built in.
3D work scatters files: an .stl downloaded for printing, a .glb from a marketplace, .blend saves, .usdz previews for AR, texture PNGs, render MP4s. Sorting by type usually drops them in a folder called “Other”. DeclutrDeclutr has a 3D Models category built in: one click sorts every model out of Downloads or the Desktop, textures go to Images, renders to Videos, and one Undo puts everything back.
A project structure for 3D
Project name/
models/ .blend .fbx .obj
textures/ .png .jpg .exr
renders/ .png .mp4
exports/ .glb .usdz .stl
Keep downloaded assets apart, in an Assets library folder sorted by source or kind, so a project folder only holds what it uses.
Formats Declutr puts in 3D Models
.blend .ma .mb .obj .fbx .dae .3ds .max .c4d .skp .stl .ply .x3d .gltf .glb .usd .usda .usdz .3mf .f3d .step
Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, SketchUp, Fusion, printing formats (.stl, .3mf) and Apple’s .usdz are all covered. With Pro, add more, such as .abc or .ztl, in Declutr’s File types settings.

Select a .usdz in Finder and press Space: Quick Look shows the model in 3D, and recent macOS versions do the same for many .obj and .stl files. It’s the fastest way to decide what to keep before sorting.
