How to organize your Mac desktop
Stacks hide the mess on a Mac desktop, they don't clear it. How to use them, how to hide or tidy icons, and how to empty the Desktop for good in one click.
The fastest fix is Stacks: Control-click the Desktop and choose Use Stacks (⌃⌘0). macOS piles every file into one stack per kind on the right of the screen. But the files stay on the Desktop. To empty it for real, DeclutrDeclutr sorts every file into folders by type in one click, or you can do it by hand with the steps below.
1. Stacks: tidy in one click
Once Stacks are on, Control-click the Desktop and choose Group Stacks By to switch from Kind to Date Last Opened, Date Added, Date Modified, Date Created or Tags. Click a stack to open it; with a trackpad, swipe left or right with two fingers over a stack to scrub through its files.
Stacks are good at one thing: making the Desktop look calm right now. They do not move any file, so the Desktop folder still holds every file, and Finder, Spotlight and the Open dialog of every app still show them all.

If you prefer icons to piles, Control-click the Desktop:
- Clean Up snaps the icons to a grid where they are.
- Clean Up By lines them up by name, kind, date or size.
- Sort By does the same and keeps doing it for every new file. Set it to None to place icons by hand.
Press ⌘J on the Desktop for the view options: icon size, grid spacing, text size, and label position. A smaller icon and a tighter grid fit twice as many files, which only helps if you also remove some.
3. Hide the icons
To see the wallpaper and nothing else:
- macOS 14 Sonoma or later: System Settings > Desktop & Dock, then turn off Show Items On Desktop. The files are still in the Desktop folder in Finder.
- Older versions: run this in Terminal, and replace
falsewithtrueto bring the icons back.

Hard drives, external disks and connected servers on the Desktop have their own switch: Finder > Settings > General, under Show these items on the desktop.
Hiding is a good choice for screen sharing and recordings. As a way to organize, it only moves the mess out of sight.
4. Empty the Desktop for good
A Desktop stays empty when nothing lands there by default and when you clear it on a schedule.
- Send screenshots elsewhere. Press ⇧⌘5, click Options, and under Save to choose Other Location. The details are in where screenshots go on a Mac.
- Sort what is already there. Open the Desktop in a Finder window (⇧⌘D), choose View > Use Groups, group by Kind, and move each group in one go: PDFs to Documents, images to Pictures, installers to the Trash.
- Keep one “Now” folder. Files you are working on this week go in a single folder on the Desktop, not loose. When the week ends, file its content.
- Clear it every Friday. Anything on the Desktop that is not in the Now folder gets filed or trashed. It takes five minutes when it is weekly.
On macOS 26 Tahoe, Shortcuts can move new files off the Desktop as they arrive: open Shortcuts, then Automation, +, the Folder trigger on Desktop, and add a Move File action for each kind of file. On older versions, Automator’s Folder Action does the same job.

Stacks only hide the mess: every file is still in the Desktop folder, in Spotlight and in every Open dialog. To stop losing files, they need to leave the Desktop.
Where the free method stops
Stacks hide the files and Finder moves them one group at a time. Nothing built into macOS sorts a full Desktop into folders in one step, and ⌘Z in Finder only takes back the last move, not the whole cleanup.
