How to create a folder on a Mac (and a structure worth keeping)

Click the Desktop or open a Finder window where you want the folder, press ⇧⌘N, type a name, and press Return. To create a folder and put files in it at once, select the files and press ⌃⌘N (New Folder with Selection).

Six ways to create a folder

1. Keyboard: ⇧⌘N in Finder or on the Desktop.
2. Right-click: Control-click an empty spot in a Finder window or on the Desktop and choose New Folder.
3. Menu bar: File > New Folder.
4. With files inside: select the files, Control-click and choose New Folder with Selection (⌃⌘N). Finder names it “New Folder With Items”; type the real name right away.
5. In a Save dialog: when an app asks where to save, click New Folder at the bottom (expand the dialog with the arrow next to the file name if you don’t see it).
6. Terminal: mkdir -p ~/Documents/Projects/2026 creates the folder and any missing parent folders in one line.

To rename a folder later, select it and press Return. To create a folder in iCloud Drive, open iCloud Drive in the Finder sidebar and use any of the methods above.

Give it a color or an icon

On macOS 26 Tahoe, Control-click a folder and choose Customize Folder. Pick a color, a symbol that looks embossed on the folder, or an emoji. The change syncs to iPhone and iPad through iCloud. It works on your own folders, not on Applications, Library, System or Users.

On older versions, the closest is a color tag: Control-click the folder and click a color. It shows as a dot next to the name and in the sidebar, and a Smart Folder can list everything with that tag.

Can’t create a folder?

• External drive formatted as NTFS (from a Windows PC): macOS reads it but can’t write to it. Select the drive, press ⌘I and check Format. To write to it from both Mac and Windows, it needs to be reformatted as exFAT in Disk Utility, which erases it: copy the files off first.
• No permission: in the same ⌘I window, Sharing & Permissions must show “Read & Write” for you.
• A locked folder or a read-only disk image: a .dmg you opened is read-only by design. Copy its content to a real folder first.

A structure worth keeping

Creating a folder takes a second. Deciding where it goes is what keeps a Mac tidy a year later. The short version:

• Everything you keep lives in Documents, in five to eight top-level folders named after areas of your life or work (Admin, Home, Work, Projects, Archive), not after file types.
• No more than three levels deep. Deeper than that, you stop filing.
• Name files with the date first: 2026-09-22 Lease renewal.pdf sorts by date in any window.
• The Desktop and Downloads are inboxes you empty each week.
